The Sleep Medicine laboratory was founded by Prof. Peretz Lavie who has been recently appointed the president of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. From 1993-1999, Prof. Lavie served as the Dean of The Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, and during 2001-2008 he was the Technion

Vice-President for Resource Development and external affairs. He is one of the world's leading researchers in the field of sleep and its disorders. He was a member of the editorial boards of most of the leading sleep research and sleep medicine related journals, and the Editor in chief of the Journal of Sleep Research. His scientific and clinical contributions to sleep research and sleep disorders won him the "EMET" prize in medicine for 2006, which is the highest scientific prize unb Israel, the "Elkales" prize in medicine for 2004 and the University of Pisa sleep award for 2004

The first sleep laboratory was opened in the Technion in 1975, and was used for basic research in psychophysiology of sleep and dreams. Gradually, clinical services had been developed, side by side with basic research. Commencing in 1980, side-by-side with the research laboratory, the Sleep Medicine Center where diagnosis and treatment of disorders were carried out, has evolved. Additional branches of the Sleep Medicine Center were opened in 1985 in Tel Aviv, in 1990 in Jerusalem, in 1992 in Wolfson Hospital in Holon, and in 1995 in Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera 

The Director of all the Sleep Medicine Center clinics is Dr. Ron Peled, M.D., Neurologist and Sleep Medicine certified (USA). The senior physicians of the Sleep Medicine Centers specialize in various fields of medicine and, in addition, are certified sleep medicine specialists (USA). All branches are recognized by the Ministry of Health for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in adults and children. To-date, 120,000 people have been diagnosed and treated in the sleep clinics, which is considered to be one of the leading centers worldwide. Today, the Center comprises 4 clinics in:
Haifa - RAMBAM Hospital, Hadera - Hillel Yaffe Hospital, Holon - Wolfson Hospital, and in the out-patients Clinics of Hadassah Hospital, Jerusalem. Each clinic has managing staff, technical and medical staff who are responsible for arranging appointments, sleep examinations, and determining the diagnosis and follow-up treatment
